We all scream for ice cream!

Sometimes we all need a little fun!  And in this era of home schooling, what's better than fun that ticks lots of boxes:

1) Kids do most of the work

2) They have to stand still for 20min so you can actually have a full cup of tea

3) It's also a science lesson!

What is this magic?  It's make your own ice cream!  And believe me, you'll never buy a tub of Walls again it's so easy.

Here's how we did it:

What you need:

Ingredients:
  1. 6 Tablespoons of cream of some sort (thick or thin is fine).
  2. 1 Tablespoon sugar.
  3. 1 teaspoon vanilla (optional)
  4. A LOT of ice - this is the only bit that means you might have to think ahead
  5. 1 cup of salt - Granulated, table or whatever.
Equipment:
  1. Preferably a tin with a lid that seals.  Like our tins!  If you don't have a tin one of the dreaded plastic ziplock bags.
  2. A large, deep bowl.  We used a mixing jug. Again, if  you are really stuck you can use a second large ziplock bag.  Not our preference, for obvious reasons.
  3. A lid for the bowl - we used a bees-wax wrap with an elastic band.
Instructions:
  1. Add your cream, sugar and vanilla to the tin (or bag) and mix well.  We did this by gently shaking the tins.
  2. Put the half the ice in the bowl, then put your tin (or bag) in.
  3. Sprinkle the ice with 1/2 the salt, top up with more ice, and add the remaining salt.
  4. Put the top on the bowl tightly.  We used the bees-wax wrap with an elastic band.
  5. Turn on some energetic music, hand the bowl to your child and instruct them to shake back and forth gently.  Tell them it takes 20min (it can take less, but we think 20min for a cuppa is about right).
  6. Open up the tin, look at your amazing concoction, eat!
