How do we calculate our CO2 impact?


Plastic is just one part of tackling the climate emergency.  Reducing our CO2 impact is the most important thing we can do to ensure our kids' future on this planet.  So, how do we calculate the CO2 impact that swapping to Rowdy Kind can have?

There's 2 areas we currently calculate CO2 is reduced in our products: Reduced plastics manufacturing and reduced transport emissions. 

Plastic Saved
The weight of average 250ml plastic bottle is 6.41g.  As each bar is the equivalent of two bottes,  6.41 x 2 = 12.82g of plastic saved per bar

CO2 Savings from not making the bottles:
For every kilo of plastic produced, 2.9 kg of CO2 is emitted. A further 1.5kg of CO2 is emitted during moulding.  So 4.4x .01282 = .056kg CO2 Saved per bar

CO2 Savings in transportation

OK, so stick with us.  There is a study that shows that per 1.5L of water transported within Italy, .0129kg CO2 is emitted through transportation to retailers.  Now, our products are made in the UK, while a lot of our competitors are made overseas.  However, we don't want to make incorrect claims here, so we are going to look at the savings within the country.  By that I mean, if a liquid product was made in the UK, vs. our product made in the UK what are the savings.  This study on Italian transport of water is the closest we get, because it's easy to translate the weight impacts.

So: Per 500g, that would be .0043g of CO2.
Our bars are 85% lighter & smaller = .0036kg CO2 saved in transport

In summary:

CO2 Saved = .056 + .0036 = .06kg CO2 saved per bar.
OR 60g CO2 saved per bar.

I know that doesn't sound like much, but lets add it up over a kids' life: 247 bottles in the first 10 years of their life = 143 bars =8.6kg CO2 saved per child. 

  • If the 4m kids in the UK swapped on their next purchase they’d save 240T of CO2
  • If they swapped for all 8 of their annual purchases (8 is the average number of times people buy a kids' shampoo, body wash, moisturiser etc. in a year) it would save 1,920T CO2 every year.
  • In 10 years, if we all stopped using bottled products on our kids, we could save 20 thousand tonnes.

This isn't enough.  It is 100% not enough. But it is a step in the right direction
