Ingredients Information

What is Sodium Coco Isethionate?

This is a very mild, coconut based cleanser.  It comes in a fine powder to make it easy to combine into our bars.  In the US they call it “baby foam”, which gives you an idea of how wonderful it is!  A little science, but bars need to have two slightly different cleansers to be really good.  So we have this in combination with Cocamidopropyl Betaine.

What is Cocamidopropyl Betaine?

This is a liquid coconut-based cleanser.  It’s known for producing foam quickly, it’s what makes our bars foam up, even thought they’re super gentle.

What is Stearic Acid?

First thing to say, is our Stearic Acid is certified palm free.  In our bars it does three things – it makes all the ingredients combine together into a smooth solid bar, secondly it helps make them foam up and be fun, and finally it leaves a lovely silky smooth moisturised feel on skin.

What is Benzyl Alcohol and Dehydroacetic Acid?

These are preservatives.  Because our bars have very low pH they need something in them to make sure they don't get any bacteria or other yukkies growing on them in the damp environment of your bathroom.  I know, sounds gross.  We use the mildest preservative possible, certified by COSMOS and EcoCert bodies.  They're both less than 0.9% of the bar.

What ingredients make this bar great for hair?

We've added Provitamin B5 and EcoSilk (Isamyl Laurate & Isoamyl Cocoate in the ingredients list).  Both are vegan hair conditioning and nourishing agents, so they will make hair less prone to tangles and easier to comb out.  We've also added Raspberry Seed Oil and Raspberry Powder for extra vitamins and antioxidants to help keep hair healthy and shiny.

What are CI numbers and Synthetic Mica?

We use mica to colour our bars.  We use Mica because it is extremely gentle, will never penetrate the skin barrier and rinses off without staining.   We use either synthetic mica, which is the same as the mica you'd find in nature but made in a lab, nor natural mica where our supplier is able to illustrate the mica is sourced sustainably and ethically.

What is Behentrimonium Methosulfate & Cetearyl Alcohol?

These are the two ingredients that deep condition and detangle hair, plus make sure the bar is firm and lasts for ever.  They are 100% Vegan and cruelty free.   Surprisingly despite its name, Behentrimonium Methosulfate is not a Sulfate (like, the ones that people find make them itchy and so on!).  The molecule is a totally different shape, and that's why it conditions rather than cleanses too.

Why do you use Paprika in the conditioner bar?

Paprika creates the beautiful orange of the bar, without fading or potentially colouring hair by accident!  It's a great, natural (edible!) way to colour bars.

What is Tacopherol?

Tachopherol  is a natural Vitamin 5 that's in the oils and butters in this bar.  It's an amazing antioxidant, and our bar has it in such naturally high quantities we have to name it on the label!  Isn't that cool?

What is Benzyl Salicylate, Linalool and Limonene?

Benzyl Salicylate is in the scent of this bar, making sure it lasts as long as possible.  Linalool and Limolene are also in the scent of this bar.  Although rare, some people are allergic to these, so we make sure they're clearly labelled on the ingredients list.

What is Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate and what does it do in the bubble brick?

Sodium Lauryl Sulfocetate (SLSa) is a non-sulfate coconut surfectant - it means it's something that cleanses and bubbles, but it's sulfate-free.  When the baking soda produces oxygen, the SLSa forms the bubble structures around it making it rest on the surface of the bath!

What is Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond Oil)?

Sweet Almond Oil is the pressed oil of almonds.  Many people use it to treat eczema, and it is a gentle, non-clogging moisturiser.  We have it in our bars because it helps offset the drying tendency of Baking Soda.  Unfortunatly it is a tree nut oil, so if you have a tree nut allergy we'd suggest caution and if in doubt steer clear.

What is Polysorbate 80?

Polysorbate 80 is a plant-based liquid used to bring all the ingredients of of Bubble Brick together and make sure it really bubbles in the bath.  It is very gentle for skin, which is why we've used it in our bubble brick, because your kid is going to be literally swimming in it we're trying to use the most gentle skin ingredients possible.

What is Mentha Spicata (Spearmint Essential Oil)?

An essential oil derrived from pressed leaves of Spearmint, it's what gives our bubble brick it's refreshing smell!

What are CI numbers?

This is the "official" way to refer to colours in cosmetics - in this case the blue, purple & green colours!

We use mica to colour our bars, and a liquid to colour the bubble brick.  We love and prefer Mica to other colourants because it is extremely gentle, will never penetrate the skin barrier and rinses off without staining.   We use either synthetic mica, which is the same as the mica you'd find in nature but made in a lab, or natural mica where our supplier is able to illustrate the mica is sourced sustainably and ethically.

Why does the Bubble Brick have Rayon, Urea,  Aqua, Tin Oxide, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, & Shellac in it?

These are all used to make the sparkling biodegradable glitter that's sprinkled on our bars.  They make it stay sparkly in your bath without cluttering the environment in plastic particles.  What is Biodegradeable glitter!  Good question.  It is small flakes that are made from plants, mostly eucalyptus trees, that are sustainably managed.  These glitters are 100% plastic free, aluminium free and antimony free (i.e. do not damage the environment or skin and disappear entirely into nature).  It is compliant with all the microbead and microplastic legislation.

How to use

How to use a Bubble Brick:

Using our Bubble Brick is easy!  While running the bath, just break off a chunk (almost like a cookie!) and hold it under the running water while crumbling it in your hand until completely disintegrated.  Bits may drop into the bottom of the bath - that’s no problem, just swish the water around to completely dissolve them (this also helps make even bigger bubbles!).  If you have low water pressure swish the bath water around to make lots of bubbles.  The end result is just as many bubbles as liquid bubble bath, and no plastic - Fantastic!

For storage we recommend storing our brick on a small plate or soap dish.  After the first use our brick will fit into a Rowdy Kind tin, but when you first receive it it will be a little too large to fit the tin.

How do I use a bar to wash my kids’ hair?

SUPER easy – but don’t take our word for it, we have a video 😊 .  Have a look HERE.

How do you recommend I use the bars?

The great thing about the bars is you actually can just hand it over to your kid (unlike a liquid where there’s always that risk it’s all going to disappear down the drain!!).  If you want detailed info on how you can use it, have a look HERE.

How do I use a bar to condition my kids’ hair?

Once you've done it once, you'll be like "oh, so easy!". Just rub the bar directly onto the longer ends of wet hair, it will almost melt into the hair.  Thenk massage it up the lengths of the hair with your hands.  Leave it for a minute and then rinse out like normal

FAQ’s

This is a selection of our most commonly asked FAQs about these products.  For the full FAQ list please see each individual bar's listing.

What makes your bars suitable for kids’ hair & skin?

This shampoo and Hair & Everywhere Bars have only very gentle cleansers.  That's because kids' scalps and skin aren't oily like tween, teen or adults so they don't need the vigorous cleansing that yours or mine does.  Our shampoo has added hair strengtheners: raspberry seed oil, EcoSilk and Provitamin B5, so that hair can stand up to the rough and tumble and still be shiny and strong (just like the kids!)

This conditioner is very gentle, focusing on removing tangles and staying light for kids' thinner hair.  We've put in Mango Butter to moisturise, but we're really focused on tangles here because that's what mums & dads told us they wanted.

What age is this bar suitable from?

We recommend the Hair & Everywhere Bar and shampoo from 1+, and the conditioner and bubble brick from 3+

Are your bars tear-free?

Well, we’ve done our best to get as close as possible.  There isn’t an agreed test for tear-free (that we know of!) other than testing on human eyes.  Most products that are “tear free” make this claim based on the pH of their products being neutral (which we are) or are from big companies that are able to do human trials. We find that due to lower water content our foam drips down the face less, so its less likely to get in eyes in the first place, and our pH means they are less likely to sting.  But we can't guarantee it I'm afraid.

How long does one Bubble Brick last?

One bubble brick should be good for at least 5 baths (so break off your chunks accordingly!).  If you have really hard water at home, you may need a bit more per bath in order to get the desired bubble volume.  If it doesn’t foam up for you it may be due to lack of water pressure, so swish the bath water about to make bubbles.
