It's World Book Day! Looking for a book to help your Rowdy Kid (or yourself) dig into environmentalism and sustainability? We've got you covered. We also have a few ideas about how you can Reduce & Reuse rather than buy new.
Books to Cherish
Our Planet: The One Place We All Call Home
From the WWF, with a forward by the man himself: David Attenborough. The book is full of beautiful engaging illustrations, photos, and the story of our planet for little minds. Its messages are well balanced (for instance, it makes it clear that palm oil isn’t the enemy, it’s clearing forests that is) and informative. This isn’t a book just to read, it’s a full-on experience to cherish.

See Inside Recycling & Rubbish
(an Usbourne Lift the Flap Book)
Usbourne have a load of fantastic books about the environment and sustainability, but this one is literally lifts the flap on what happens to our rubbish. It’s gone deep in the topic with some double-page fold outs, but doesn’t over step the mark on making you feel guilting about what goes in your bins - Just informed and interested.
Avoid the big bad “A” and find a local seller of Usbourne books at : https://usborne.com/gb/usbahcms/organiser/find
The Trouble With Dragons
by Debi Gliori
This picture book is really an allegory about how even a misbehaving species can make things right and do better. I love a good rhyming story to read out loud at bed time and this one won’t fail to entertain and engage while also delivering a clever moral for all of us

Reuse
Buy a used book from Oxfam
Yup, they’re online! Reuse and recycle classics old and new. When I went on the site this week I found everything from Harry Potter to old Beano’s and guides on everything from birds to bugs. The stock is always rotating, so if you see something you want you need to grab it, but this is a great alternative to buying new – after all the second “R” is Reuse.

Reduce
Use your Local Library
Of course your local library celebrates World Book Day every day really! But on the theme of Reduce: did you know most local libraries offer free access to audio books? My local library offers this service via the RB App, and there’s a brilliant book called Plastic Sucks – YOU can make a difference. It’s read by Dougie Poynter of McFly fame. This book is directed at your kids, and will make them giggle and want to take action.
Go to your local library website for details of how to access their audiobooks, and for the RB Digital app here are the links:
